Summer Homework: The Papal Visit

So much has been going on in the Church of England of late that it's often hard - for all of us - to keep our minds, hearts and eyes fixed on Christ, continuing to discern his will and proclaim his love. This summer is exactly a time for us to reflect and consider all that has happened and all that now lies before us: it is a time of prayer, of listening, and of patience.

In September, this country has the great honour of welcoming the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, to our shores. The Pope's journey retraces the steps of Saint Augustine, who brought the faith from Rome to England. It also gives us a moment, as Fr Ivan said elsewhere, "of prayer for the unity of the Church, a moment to focus on Jesus".

This Sunday we published the official prayer for the Papal Visit on the Mass Sheet. Do add it to your own prayers. There are many resources at the official website of the Papal Visit so do take a moment to see what's going on.

If you haven't read any of the Pope's writings, this is the perfect time to do so. The encyclical letters are a wonderful exploration of Charity and Hope. You can find some short excerpts for prayer and meditation here. It might also be worth seeking out some of John Henry Newman's writings - but perhaps more of that another evening.
