Last night we were very fortunate to welcome Fr Peter Geldard, sometime Secretary of the Church Union and an Anglican priest near Faversham in the Diocese of Canterbury, and now Catholic Chaplain of the University of Kent. Fr Peter came to share his experience of entering the full communion of the Catholic Church and also his time spent thinking about a corporate solution to the Anglican/Roman Catholic unity question. He gave of his time generously, answering questions and making himself available for further thoughts and questions after the session. I think what struck me the most was the sense in which this offer, of an Ordinariate, is only properly understood in the context of the past thirty years (or so) of ecumenical dialogue. Full-blown corportate reunion between the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church was left dead in the water by the decisions of 1992; this is, then, the only way in which the ARCIC vision can be realised.
