St Francis of Assisi

This popular saint is celebrated today throughout the world. St Francis the saint that spoke in simplicity, that lived poverty that saw himself and enabled others to see the presence of God in the whole of created order. Tomorrow here at St John’s we celebrate Harvest Festival; we ask God that like St Francis we too may be grateful for all the gifts with which God surrounded us.
When it was possible for me to do so, I always went to a Franciscan church on the eve of the feast of St Francis. The Franciscans have an unusual ceremony called the Transitus of Holy Father Francis. It is like a mini Easter Vigil and commemorates the death of the Seraphic Patriarch and his entry into the glories of heaven. There is a virtual edition of this Transitus here.
