O Key of David, and Sceptre of the house of Israel; that openest, and no man shutteth, and shuttests, and no man openeth: come and bring the prisoner out of the prison house, and him that sitteth in darkness, and the shadow of death.

Jesus is not only from the line of David, thus his birth in Bethlehem, he is the key of that house; he is also the sceptre of Israel. David was king but as we know the people of Israel were uncomfortable with kings and saw David and the other kings as rulers. Quite rightly their only king was God. Jesus, the second person of the Most Holy Trinity is God; God from God, light from light. Jesus is the only one who can qualify to be king of Israel fulfilling the promises made to David about the real Kingdom that will have no end. The new king has absolute power and what he opens nobody can shut and what he shuts nobody can open. By his death from the throne of the cross this king has opened for us the gates of heaven and grace, this king is ever so generous with his people and wants for them what was intended for them in God’s original plan.
We pray to this almighty King to come and free us from the prison of sin that we choose for ourselves because of our hard headedness and to free us from the shadow of death that Satan constantly calls us to.
Jesus our only and true King, our mighty deliverer, whose kingdom has no end comes to us with healing and salvation in his wings.
