This week, in the same spot, two very distinguished guests were received in Walsingham. On Tuesday St Therese was welcomed, today Prince Philip was welcomed as he officially opened the Milner wing. It was a very well organised and joyful event with great weather to make it perfect. It made me feel very humble to be part of such a wonderful and holy place. The shrine has issued a press release which I post here together with pictures that I took.
Duke of Edinburgh at Walsingham
Walsingham laid on a royal welcome for HRH the Duke of Edinburgh today.
The Anglican Shrine, celebrating the completion of a £2m renovation and improvement project, invited pilgrims, major donors, fundraisers and those involved in the construction of the new look Milner wing and Welcome centre.
“It was a great morning. Everyone associated with the Shrine can rejoice at the sense of all the hard work which is done every day to ensure people feel welcome when they arrive both at Walsingham and to the Shrine” said Bishop Lindsay Urwin OSG, Administrator of the Shrine.
Prince Philip was introduced to a wide range of people including Canon Martin Warner, Master of the Guardians and Fr. Philip North, the former Administrator, who oversaw the development project. He also met with the Sisters of Society of St Margaret who work at the Shrine.
A special guest at today’s celebrations was the Orthodox Archbishop, Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain.
Prince Philip was also given a private introduction to the Shrine Church and a chance to view the Holy House where the image of Our Lady of Walsingham is permanently surrounded by candles and intentions for prayer.
Before leaving the Shrine, Prince Philip unveiled a commemorative plaque after a short service of blessing as the new look Milner Wing and the Welcome Centre were declared officially open.
“Our aim is quite simply to provide the best welcome we can to pilgrims, visitors and tourists to this part of Norfolk and to explain what The Shrine is all about” added Bishop Urwin this afternoon.
