Cardinal Kasper to Lambeth

I have read the speech in the Osservatore Romano. I heartily recommend it to your study as soon as it appears in English. I have just chosen some sentences as a taster. They are my own translation. Here it is:

It seems to us that the commitment of the (Anglican) Communion to be “episcopally led and synodically governed” has not always managed to keep the apostolicity of Faith and that the synodical government, sometimes mistaken for a type of parliamentary process, has at times blocked the Episcopal guide as shown by (St) Cyprian and formulated in the ARCIC (documents).

Whoever has visited the great and magnificent cathedrals and Anglican churches throughout the world, whoever has visited the ancient and famous colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, whoever has taken part in the marvellous service of Evensong, whoever has experienced the beauty and eloquence of Anglican prayer, whoever has read the elegant academic works of the Anglican historians and theologians, whoever has paid attention to the significant and old contributions of Anglicans to the ecumenical movement, must know that the Anglican tradition possesses many treasures. They are, as Lumen Gentium (Vat II document) says, among those gifts “that belong to the Church of Christ, and that work towards Catholic unity” (para. N.8)

Our deep knowledge of the grandeur and noteworthy depth of the Christian culture in your tradition makes greater our preoccupation for you during the present crisis, but it also inspires hope that, with God’s help, you will find a way out of the difficulties and in a new way we shall be united in our common pilgrimage towards the unity wanted by Christ for us and for which he prays. I repeat what I have written to the Archbishop of Canterbury in December 2004: “In a friendly spirit and in ecumenical collaboration we are ready to sustain you in any way that is appropriate and necessary.”

In this light I wish to return to the difficult question posed by the archbishop as to which kind of Anglicanism we want. It comes to mind that in the critical moments of the history of the Church of England, and therefore of the Anglican Communion, you have managed to retrieve strength from the Patristic Church when that same tradition was at risk.

An example are the Caroline Divines, but above all I think of the Oxford Movement, Maybe in our own day it is possible to think about a new Oxford Movement, a recovery of the treasures present in your family. It would be a renewed discovery, a new quest of the Apostolic Tradition in a situation with no parallels. It would not mean a renouncement to your profound engagement with the challenges and struggles of humanity, to your wish for human justice and dignity, to your care that men and women will have an active role in the Church.
